Sergio Benavides hopes Brownsville police soon arrest the people or person involved in the shooting of a Pace High School student that occurred on Friday in the parking lot at Oliveira Park along El Paso Rd.
Brownsville police investigator and Public Information Officer Jose A. Laredo confirmed today (Tuesday) that the victim later died in the hospital.
“The victim has passed away,” Laredo said. “The victim was later pronounced deceased by medical personnel due to injuries sustained. He succumbed to his injuries.”
On Monday afternoon, Benavides along with other friends erected a small altar as a memorial to remember the victim, allegedly a junior at Pace which is just across from where the incident occurred. Benavides recently graduated from Pace.
Laredo said they are still investigating the case and wouldn’t comment whether any suspect has been arrested or the conditions of the victim.
“The case is still under investigation,” Laredo said.
Earlier, police reported that an unknown subject shot the victim and the suspect fled the scene. The victim was then taken to a nearby hospital.
“He used to hang out with us,” said Jose “Joey” Martinez, who also graduated recently from Pace and a friend of the victim.
It was the second shooting in Brownsville that day. Earlier another shooting was reported near Morrison Road where one person died and another person was injured.
Laredo said they are also investigating that case and won’t comment whether any suspects have been arrested.
