A 24-year-old woman is in stable condition after Brownsville police shot her during an assault confrontation last week on the 100 block of Clara Bennet Dr.
Brownsville Police Spokeswoman Melissa Gonzalez identified the woman as Chantal Gasca, who threatened police when they arrived at the scene of the conflict. The incident occurred Friday, March 1, around 7:48 p.m.
“During the incident, (the) suspect Chantal Gasca pointed a pistol at officers while holding a knife,” Gonzalez, in a press release, said. “Gasca was given several commands to drop the pistol and she didn’t comply.”
Gonzalez said officers Gonzalo Rubio and Edna Mata fired their assigned duty weapons in the direction of Gasca, who sustained gunshot wounds, but survived.
“(She) was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment,” Gonzalez said. “She’s currently in stable condition.”
As of today, Gonzalez said Gasca hasn’t been released from the hospital and she’s pending criminal charges.
Gonzalez said both officers involved in the shooting have been placed in administrative leave as per protocol.
Police officials didn’t release any more details of the incident.
Gonzalez said the case remains under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
