Hundreds of senior students gathered Wednesday at the Brownsville Events Center to learn how to apply for financial aid once they decide to go college.
“This event is to help students gather information about universities and financial aid, and an opportunity to win scholarships,” said Rose Covarrubias, a James Pace High School counselor. “Our goal is to have every one of our students to attend college, to have a degree and have a successful life.”
Pil
ar Janis, a higher education counselor at BISD, told parents and students there are a few steps to take to go college.
Janis said students first have to apply to college, take the required tests, apply for financial aid, and keep the required grades to complete their studies.
BISD officials said the event wouldn’t be possible without the support of administrators, school counselors and staff, and parents.
BISD Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas spoke to the students about how hard work and dedication pays off.
Zendejas, who attended Stanford university, cleaned houses and took care of children to pay for college.
She also said parents are an important part of their children’s achievements.
“Students have to make things happen,” Zendejas said. “I hope that the parents, who are here today, make sure that you inspire your kids, and you push them (to succeed).”
More than a dozen of students won $500 scholarships sponsored by BISD and IBC bank among other supporters in the area.
